Jewish Citizens in Belgrade in 1853

The Ministry of the Interior requested the Arbitrary Court to compile a report regarding the state buildings, schools, hospitals, population, etc. The Court made a report and communicated it to the Administration of the Town of Belgrade. It was reported that Belgrade had 12.594 citizens, 1336 tax payers and Jewish tax payers 156.

Joca Nikolić Filed a Lawsuit Against Moreno Konortić

Joca Nikolić filed a lawsuit against Moreno Konortić, a merchant, regarding the goods which Nikolić had sent to Konortić from Constantinople over his apprentice. Consequently, The Belgrade Town Court decided to establish a compromising commission consisted of two Jewish and two Serbian merchants to help in the afore said lawsuit.

Jozef Nisim Padro and Avram Elija to Take Oath

The Belgrade Town Court communicated the Administration of the Town of Belgrade regarding the oaths which Jozef Nisim Padro and Avram Elija, had to take in front of a rabbi, according to Jewish laws. They were summoned to the Court as witnesses in a lawsuit of Ozer B. Avram against Isak Fermo, thus the oaths would guarantee that they would speak only truth.

Jurisdiction of Jewish Community in Deeds Validation and Tax Assessment

The Ministry of the Interior requested the Administration of the Town of Belgrade to provide information whether the Jewish Community had a jurisdiction to validate deeds to Jewish properties or the Belgrade Town Court had that jurisdiction solely, and further to provide the information related to the tax assessments of the Jewish citizens. The Conciliation Court reported that the Jewish Community had never validated land deeds, it only gave its property to individuals to build houses on the Community land. Regarding the matter of taxes, the Court reported that Jews did not assess taxes by themselves, but taxes were collected by Jewish officials who then delivered them to the Court.

Jakov Nisim Sentenced for Participating in Theft

The Appeal Court sentenced to death Jakov Nisim for participating in a theft. Three days later Nisim was pardoned by the decree of the Prince, and his sentence was replaced by 50 strokes and deportation to Turkey. The file comprised a police protocol of Nisim‘s deportation and his personal description.

Jakov Ruso Requested to Settle His Debt and Court Fees

The Belgrade Town Court requested the Administration of the Town of Belgrade to collect the debt amount from Jakov Ruso for the debt settlement to Solomon Levi from Trieste, likewise the associated court fees. Also, Ruso had to pay the court fees for the lawsuit he had filed against Josif Ozerović. The Administration reported that it failed to collect the debt and court amounts from Jakov Ruso because he had moved to Niš.
